With long, dark winters, it's no surprise that Scandinavians have mastered the art of indoor lighting. The secret is layering.
Ambient lighting
This is your base layer — soft overhead or floor lamps that fill the room with general light. Choose warm bulbs (around 2700K) for a cozy glow.
Task lighting
Reading lamps, desk lamps and under-cabinet kitchen lights provide focused light exactly where you need it.
Accent lighting
Candles, string lights and small table lamps add warmth and atmosphere to corners that ambient light doesn't reach.
Natural light first
Before adding artificial light, make the most of daylight — keep windows uncovered or use sheer curtains, and place mirrors to reflect light deeper into the room.
Dimmers make a difference
Adding dimmer switches lets you adjust the mood from bright and functional during the day to soft and relaxed in the evening.
Layering these three types of light creates depth and warmth, even on the darkest days.
