It's easy to jump straight to Pinterest boards and shopping carts, but the most impactful (and free) step in any home refresh is decluttering.
Why it matters
A cluttered room makes even beautiful furniture look chaotic. Removing what you don't need often reveals that you don't need to buy as much as you thought.
Start with one category
Rather than tackling a whole room, start with one category — books, clothes, or kitchen gadgets — across your whole home. It's easier to compare items and make decisions.
Use the one-year rule
If you haven't used or worn something in the past year (and it's not seasonal or sentimental), it's a strong candidate to donate or sell.
Create three piles
Keep, donate/sell, and discard. Be honest, and don't create a fourth "maybe" pile that just becomes more clutter.
Reassess before you shop
Once your space is decluttered, live with it for a week before buying anything new. You may find the space already feels transformed.
Decorating is so much more effective — and enjoyable — once you're only working with things you actually love and use.
